Pure linen damask is the name given to products woven from pure flax yarns in a special manner so that subtle patterns are visible even in an all white cloth, woven from all white yarns. This is a more expensive way of weaving, for it requires threads to be densely woven in contrasting directions, which creates a pattern that is visible when viewed at certain angles. Across large surfaces, lustrous damask fabrics are most extraordinary, as shifting light sources continually reveal new designs to the eye in hide-and-seek fashion.
What is the difference between single damask and double damask?
Double damask is a fabric from another era which is still woven by Thomas Fergusons. It's even more densely woven than the more usual single damask linen. The higher number of yarns used in the weaving allows finer definition of the designs. However, for various technical reasons, the weaving process for double damask is incredibly time consuming and this is reflected in the price.
We've chosen to feature in our online shop the less costly, but still beautiful, single damask linen tablecloths with their beautiful drape and natural lustre. However, if you are interested in obtaining a double damask tablecloth (and/or double damask napkins and placemats), please don't hesitate to contact us. We can confidently claim that our prices for all qualities of Irish linen are possibly the lowest you will find anywhere.

In order to keep down prices and avoid superfluous packaging, we are offering Irish linen damask tablecloths in basic cellophane packaging. If, however, you require your tablecloth presented in a Thomas Ferguson luxury gift box, thus reflecting the quality of this resplendent linen, the cost is an additional £4.00
You can request boxed packaging when your order your tablecloth in the online shop below. Luxury packaging is currently only available for Thomas Ferguson single and double damask tablecloths.
 If you choose a tablecloth in 'white', the tablecloth will be packed in a green and gold Thomas Ferguson box as can be seen in the foreground. Tablecloth designs in 'natural' are packed in a brown Kraft box as shown in the image above.

IMPORTANT: Irish linen damask is very crisp when brand new. However, after a few launderings you will find that the weave becomes tighter and the texture increasingly silky. So please be patient with your new cloth and allow it age gracefully.
Please also note that a new Irish linen tablecloth will probably appear less white than a well used Irish linen cloth, especially if the old cloth has been laundered with products containing optical brighteners. We recommend the use of laundry producst free of chlorine bleach and optical whiteners, as such substances, when used frequently, will weaken flax fibres and shorten the lifespan of your table linen.
