![]() Hardwearing Pure Irish Linen Stable Rubbers
The expression 'rubbing down' was first used in the late 17th century for the act of rubbing away dust and sweat from a horse. Linen twill towels were used for this purpose. Twill cloth is distinguished by its open weave and diaganol lines of yarn, which impart additional strength to the cloth.
Made in Ireland by master weavers Thomas Ferguson, these linen cloths are lettered 'Stable Rubber' and are available in a choice of red or blue central stripe. Irish linen stable rubbers become a little softer with use and are the perfect textile for rubbing down your horse.
You may have seen less expensive look-alike stable cloths made from cotton. Irish linen is quite different; for these stable rubbers are woven from strong, highly absorbent flax yarns and will outlive the cheap cotton versions by a number of years.
Before using Irish linen stable rubbers for the first time, we recommend that they are washed at 40 degrees C. to soften the flax fibres and increase their ability to absorb moisture when in use. Thereafter, the cloths can be machine washed at 50-60 degrees C, or at higher temperatures if necessary.
We think these characterful Irish linen stable rubbers would make a most welcome and practical gift for the horse owner.
Other Uses for Irish Linen Stable Rubbers
Irish linen stable rubbers can also be used as sauna towels for humans. Although the towels will soften a little after a few launderings, they will remain rough enough for health enthusiasts who enjoy invigorating friction rubs!
An Irish linen stable rubber can also be made into an under-sink curtain for the country style kitchen. Simply hem along one edge of the stable rubber and hang it horizontally beneath the sink, using an ordinary net curtain spring threaded through the hem. The cloths are just the right size for this purpose.
