 Art Nouveau and Art Deco Style Jewellery Art nouveau and art deco styles of art and design are frequently confused by new admirers, and thus the terms are sometimes used interchangebly. Art nouveau and art deco are different movements, separated not only by their place in history, but also through their essential mode of expression.
Art nouveau came into being during the last decade of the 1800s and early 1900s. It pays homage to beauty through its flamboyant and sweeping lines, its frequent asymmetrical depictions of abundant flowers and leaves; winged creatures and mythical beings; sinuous vines and idealised femininity.
Art deco followed in the footsteps of art nouveau, having evolved during the early 1920s through the 1930s. It, too, pays homage to beauty, but through cleaner lines and a stronger sense of geometric symmetry. Art deco patterns and motifs include sunbursts, zig-zags, steps and fringes. The art deco inspired earrings below feature a pronged fringe.
