Dried heather flowers are tiny, round grains with a pinkish-mauve hue, interspersed with flecks of green (the little leaves). The flowers are beautiful and significant despite being so tiny, for they possess a pearl-like sheen. This makes them stand out from the crowd. Heather also has a gentle honey-like scent, which is more noticable when you inhale from a bag of heather grains.
Heather is reasonably priced. However, it doesn't float on the breeze in the same way that some other flower petals do. So heather is best used sparingly with larger quantities of floaty petals such as our burgundy rose petals. It also blends well with blue mallow, lavender and, jasmine. For a fascinating colour contrast, looks great with calendula/marigold petals and Roman chamomile.
Heather makes a delightful potpourri ingredient. As a confetti ingredient, it's perfect for Scottish weddings and moorland handfastings.
